Men's Golf Notebook - Collegiate - Oct. 15, 2013

MOCS MEN’S GOLF NOTEBOOK Collegiate | Final Round | October 15, 2013

Last year’s squad shot 881 at the Collegiate finishing fourth. Just 12 months later, that total was bettered by 26 strokes by a team featuring two seniors (Davis Bunn & Chris Robb), one junior (Liam Johnston) and two freshmen (Wes Gosselin & Ewan Scott).

The Mocs shot 857 (-7) in its first visit to Berkeley Hills in 2011 so the final tally of 855 is a team record at the event.

The Mocs boast the Collegiate runner-up for the third straight in Johnston. The previous two such performances came from former U.S. Amateur Champ Steven Fox in 2011 and 2012.

Johnston set a lot of “bests” this week. His tied for second finish is his third top 10, but first top five. He set new marks for 18-hole (67), 36-hole (138) and 54-hole (208) scores as well as carding 13 birdies. The eight-under par 208 is the Mocs best result at Berkeley Hills and is the lowest score since Fox shot 208 (-8) as runner-up at the 2013 BancorpSouth Intercollegiate in April.

Johnston played just his second event of 2013-14 missing qualifying for the opening two events and entering as an individual at last week’s Brickyard Collegiate. His entry at the Brickyard came after Air Force had to drop out because of the government shutdown.

He is -14 through 108 holes with a strong 69.67 scoring average. He has played par or better every round this season (6) which gives him 17 in his career.

Over the first six rounds of the season, UTC averaged 299.0 strokes per round. In the last six, that drops 10 shots to 289.0. The season average is now 294.0.

Chattanooga’s under-par score of minus nine (855) is the first time the team has ended a tournament below par since winning the 2012 NCAA Bowling Green Regional with a -5 total (859). It was one of four par or better finishes for that special season.

It’s the lowest team total since turning in 855 (+15) winning the 2010 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.

The Mocs’ four eagles in round two were the most in recent records. Unfortunately, that’s not something that has been kept on a regular basis prior to the 2009-10 season.

For the tournament, UTC registered five eagles. The most in recent seasons is six at the 2011 Carpet Capital Collegiate and the 2012 Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. The counters scored three in the final round of both tournaments.

Chattanooga set new team season bests in eagles (5), birdies (39), fewest bogeys (28) and fewest others (5) as well as totals on par 3’s (+3), par 4’s (E) and par 5’s (-12).

Individually, Johnston set the season mark for eagles with three, while tying Davis Bunn’s Carpet Capital 13-birdie performance. In 108 holes, he has played par or better on 95 of them with three eagles and 24 birdies.

Robb tied Scott’s total of 40 pars at the Brickyard. Scott had a season-best 11 birdies for the event.

UTC shot -12 on its counting cards on the four par 5’s at Berkeley Hills. That included an amazing -12 during the second round. Scott (-6) and Johnston (-5) led the way on these holes.

The squad is -39 for the season on such holes. The -12 this week topped the previous low of -10 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Johnston is averaging 4.46 stokes per par five hole at -13 for his six rounds.
