Henderson All-Conference at SoCon Championships
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) earned all-conference honors in the women’s 3000 meter run Saturday evening on Day One of the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Despite battling a late-season injury, Henderson, with a time of 9:38.15, was four seconds off the Southern Conference record set by former Moc Shannon Wommack in 2006. Elon’s Allyson Oram took first in the event with a time of 9:34.97, just missing out on the league mark. Junior Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) also scored for the Mocs placing eighth with a time of 10:19.16.

In the men’s 3000 meter final, transfer Harry Smithers (Melbourne, Australia) finished fifth for Chattanooga with a time of 8:35.41. Also scoring placing in scoring position for the Mocs was senior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) with a time of 8:41.26 in seventh place. Furman took the top two spots with junior Tripp Hurt besting his teammate with a time of 8:18.06.

Both Distance Medley Relay teams placed fifth. The men, led off by junior Patrick O’Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.), finished with a time of 10:24.61, just behind Appalachian State and ahead of Western Carolina. Sophomore Geoff Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn.) ran the second leg followed by sophomore Marquis Carter (Memphis, Tenn.) and senior Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) running the anchor.

The women’s team was led off by freshman Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.). Senior Gabby Cader (Cleveland, Tenn.) ran the second leg with sophomores Kianna Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) and Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) running the final two legs. UTC finished fifth with a time of 12:32.82 between Davidson and Wofford.

Samford’s swept the DMR with the men placing first with a time of 10:02.54 while the women missed out of the conference record by less than 10 seconds with a time of 11:52.66.

Several UTC runners qualified for the finals on Day Two. In the men’s 60 meter hurdles sophomore Iman Isang (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will run Sunday in the finals of his event after placing seventh with a time of 8.72 seconds.

Sophomore Matthew Marshall (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) earned a spot in the final of the men’s Mile placing 12th with a time of 4:34.68. Sophomore Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) ran a 5:09.48 qualifying time in the women’s Mile run prelim and is set to run on Sunday.

Sophomores Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) and Marquis Carter (Memphis, Tenn.) will have a chance to improve on their finish last season as both qualified for the conference finals of the men’s 800 meter run. Carter was second last season with Janssen placing fourth. Janssen took seventh today with a time of 1:56.42 and Carter was eighth at 1:57.00.
