Women's Basketball Ranked 16th in Preseason Poll

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team had an exciting year from start to finish in 2012-13 with a season-opening win over nationally-ranked Tennessee at home to a put back in the final seconds to claim the Southern Conference Tournament crown.

That excitement has carried over as the first preseason poll has hit the newsstands and the Lady Mocs are ranked 16th on the Lindy’s Magazine Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll released on September 14.

Chattanooga posted an overall record of 29-4, tying its school record for wins, and went 19-1 in Southern Conference play. After suffering an overtime loss on the road in early January, the Lady Mocs went on a 19-game win streak that included 16 regular season league matchups and three straight wins in the SoCon Tournament for the title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Lady Mocs open the 2013-14 season at home against SEC foe Alabama on November 8 in the second game of a double-header with the men’s team. The 2013-14 campaign will mark the first for Jim Foster as head coach. Foster sports an overall record of 783-307 (.718) and was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in June this year.

This marks the second time Chattanooga has enjoyed such preseason accolades. Street and Smith’s 2004 College Basketball picked UTC 16th in the nation, the highest ranking of any preseason poll. That followed the Lady Mocs' historic win over Rutgers in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament.

Topping the preseason poll is UConn followed by Duke, California, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisville, Baylor and Maryland rounding out the top 10.

Chattanooga returns 10 from last year’s squad including Southern Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player Ashlen Dewart (Spartanburg, S.C.), all-conference performer Taylor Hall (New Tazewell, Tenn.), Tatianna Jackson (Atlanta, Ga.), an all-freshman team selection and all-SoCon Tournament pick Alex Black (Memphis, Tenn.).
