CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team received 41 votes in the initial AP Top 25 Poll released Friday, Nov. 1, 31st overall.
UTC posted a 29-4 overall record last season, matching the school record for wins set in 2003-04 and again in 2007-08, both under former head coach Wes Moore who departed following last year for NC State.
The Lady Mocs, selected to defend their Southern Conference crown by both the league coaches and SoCon media, return 10 players from last year’s championship team including six seniors. Senior Ashlen Dewart (Spartanburg, S.C.), the 2013 SoCon Tournament MVP, was selected the Preseason Player of the Year by the SoCon coaches.
Also returning to the court this season for UTC are starters Alex Black (Memphis, Tenn.) and Taylor Hall (New Tazewell, Tenn.). Black was selected to the SoCon Tournament second team while Hall was selected All-Conference and to the SoCon Tournament First Team and Tatianna Jackson (Atlanta, Ga.) was voted to the league’s All-Freshman team.
Chattanooga received votes in 11 of 21 AP Top 25 Polls last season. UTC started the year with 10 votes in the initial poll and had as many as 12 in the third week before dropping out by week eight. The Lady Mocs received votes through the final four polls.
Earlier this year, Chattanooga was 16th in the “Lindy’s Magazine” women’s basketball preseason poll.
Connecticut received all 36 first place votes for the top overall selection followed by Duke, Stanford, Tennessee and Louisville for the top five teams. The Lady Mocs will face the Lady Vols on November 14 in Knoxville.
Fans will get their first chance to see the 2013-14 Lady Mocs led by Hall of Fame Coach Jim Foster who begins his first season with Chattanooga on Monday, November 4 against Lee University at 7 p.m. at the McKenzie Arena.
