NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball coach Jim Foster was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year, the organization announced Wednesday.
Foster, in his first season with Chattanooga, led the Mocs to a 29-4 overall record and an undefeated Southern Conference mark. UTC claimed its 18th SoCon regular season title since 1984 and advanced to its 12th NCAA Tournament.
In June last year, Foster was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and in the January this year, became the 11th coach in NCAA history to win 800 games. He is one of two coaches to lead three different teams to 200 victories and the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different teams to the NCAA Tournament.
Foster was twice selected the TSWA Coach of the Year while at Vanderbilt in the 1990s. In his time with the Commodores, Foster compiled a 256-99 mark in 11 seasons. In 1993 he led his team to the NCAA Final Four. Vanderbilt advanced to four Elite Eight appearances and three Sweet 16 trips. During his tenure with the Commodores, 10 of his teams finished the season ranked in the Top 25.
Chattanooga opened the season with a win over Alabama and followed that up a few weeks later with a win over Auburn. UTC posted a 25-game win streak and remained undefeated at home for the third straight season.
In his first season, three Chattanooga players were named all-conference including Taylor Hall who became the first player in league history to be named the conference Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s former coach Cuonzo Martin was selected the men’s basketball Coach of the Year.
2014 SUMMER CAMPS
The 2014 Girl’s Basketball summer camp are set for the summer. The individual camp for ages 8-14 will run June 1-5 at the McKenzie Arena. Team camp will be June 12-14 while there will be two Elite camps. The first will run June 27-28 and the second will be August 2.
