Henderson Claims Title at Ga. State Invitational

HAMPTON, Ga. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) raced out ahead of the group and claimed her second straight title, winning the Georgia State Invitational by more than 18 seconds. She led the Lady Mocs to a second place finish behind Auburn while the men finished third led by senior Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) who placed third in the men’s race.

Henderson raced out ahead of the group and never trailed as she picked up her second victory in as many meets finishing the double-loop 4-kilometer race with a time of 14:07.61. Auburn took the next two spots with their top finisher, Rachel Givens, recording a time of 14:25.86 for second.

Chattanooga transfer Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) placed fifth overall with a time of 14:44.00 and junior Keeley Stuart (Winchester, Tenn.) was third UTC runner across the line with a top 10 finish. She was eighth overall with a time of 15:14.49.

Freshmen maddison Melchionna (Afton, Tenn.) and Hannah Chamblin (Memphis, Tenn.) were the fourth and fifth scoring runners for Chattanooga. Melchionna was 20th overall in the race featuring 73 runners, with a time of 16:02.36 and Chamblin was right behind with a time of 16:10.60. Freshman Katie Ray (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed 27th with a time of 16:30.15 and newcomer Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.) was 32nd with a time of 16:39.98.

Senior Amanda Cotter (Bristol, Conn.) who fell in the Running Mocs opening race two weeks ago was unable to finish Friday’s contest.

In the men’s race senior Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) led the Mocs to a third place finish with a third place finish in the four-loop 8-kilometer race. Auburn swept the top two spots to claim the title and Cotter was less than 13 seconds off the lead with a time of 25:33.44. Sophomore Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) was the second Moc across the line with a time of 27:10.82 placing ninth and senior Mark Cole (McKenzie, Tenn.) was 11th with a time of 27:31.46.

Sophomore Matthew Marshall (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) placed 16th with a time of 28:26.92 followed by Zack Darby (19th) with a time of 28:58.20 and sophomore Austin Ethridge (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) was 20th with a time of 29:01.26.

Head Coach Bill Gautier pulled junior Patrick O’Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and sophomore Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario) from the race due to the heat.

The Mocs placed third behind Auburn and Florida A&M. Next up for Chattanooga will be the Greater Louisville Classic on October 5 in Louisville, Ky.
