Softball on the Road This Weekend in Greensboro

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Chattanooga softball gears up for another Southern Conference road trip this weekend as the Mocs travel to Greensboro, N.C., to take on UNCG in a three-game set at the UNCG Softball Stadium.  Saturday’s doubleheader kicks off at 1 p.m. and the two SoCon foes wrap up Sunday with another 1 p.m. start.

Chattanooga is coming off a three-game sweep of Furman at Frost Stadium and looks to carry its good fortune into Greensboro for the first time this season.  Defending SoCon Pitcher of the Week Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) and the Mocs are on the road in league play for the second time this season.  Thus far, UTC is 1-1 away from Frost and 4-1 overall in the conference.  Deason continues to pace the Chattanooga pitching staff with an 8-6 record and 0.84 ERA.  She has thrown four complete games and has recorded two solo shutouts.  Sophomore Katie Henderson (Hixson, Tenn.) has posted an 8-5 record in the circle and maintains a 1.79 ERA.  Henderson has also tossed one shutout on the season.

Sophomore Anyssa Robles (Lawrenceville, Tenn.) leads the lineup with a .341 batting average and 30 hits.  The catcher is also tied for a team-best 21 RBI with fellow sophomore Criket Blanco (Maryville, Tenn.).  The UNCG pitching staff should also look out for sophomore Alyssa Taylor (Orange, Calif.) as the shortstop is riding a nine-game hitting streak.  Taylor has totaled eight hits in her last 19, batting .421 in her last five games.

As for the Spartans’ hurlers, senior Raeanne Hanks leads Greensboro pitching with six wins and a 3.93 ERA.  Tabbed as a Preseason First-Team All-Conference pitcher, Hanks has made 18 starts and managed seven complete games.  The right-hander has also thrown the Spartans’ only solo shutout of the season.

Greensboro’s lineup is led by senior Katelyn Bedwell, batting .407 on the season with a team-high 33 hits and 12 doubles.  Four UNCG batters – including Dominique Madruga, Tory Wright, Danielle Vega and Tatiana Alcala are batting – are batting above .300.

Reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year Lindsay Thomas is batting .282 with 10 doubles and 13 RBI on the season.  While she has just one homerun so far, the sophomore is a power threat.  Thomas slammed 17 homeruns and batted .377 with 63 hits in 2013.

The Mocs will return to UNCG in May for the Southern Conference Tournament, hosted by the Spartans for the second time in as many seasons.  The Spartans were tabbed to finish second in the conference by its coaches.
