STANFORD, Calif. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga redshirt freshman Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) blew away her competition at the Cobb Track and Angell Field to set a school record in the women’s 5000 meter run Friday morning at the Stanford Invitational.
Henderson posted a school-record time of 16:13.03, nearly seven seconds faster than the previous mark set by Kathleen Turchin in the 2007 season. Turchin posted her top time of 16:19.74 during the NCAA Championship preliminary race.
Adidas Team Green’s Samantha Draney placed second in the heat with a time of 16:31.69 while Henderson’s closest collegiate competitor was SMU’s Shanoah Souza more than 26 seconds behind in third with a time of 16:39.75
At this time, only two of the five heats have run. Henderson's time is the best by far. The top time in Heat 4 is 16:20.27 recorded by Saint Louis' Margo Richardson.
Former UTC runner Lanni Marchant is slated to run the 10,000 meter later this evening.
