Not only was Taylor Hall the SoCon Player of the Year, she also posted a 4.0 GPA in the spring and graduated Cum Laude with a Rehab Science Degree in May.

Mocs Top 3.0 GPA for the First Time

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Athletics Department hit a major benchmark for the first time following the 2014 spring semester.  The Mocs student-athletes posted a school record 3.07 grade-point-average for the recently completed term, topping the 3.0 mark for the first time in program history.

UTC flirted with a 3.0 GPA in the fall, scoring a then-record 2.993.  The spring semester saw Chattanooga tie a mark with 12 programs over a 3.0 team GPA, while nearly half of all student-athletes made the Dean’s List.

“This is such a tremendous accomplishment and I can’t express how proud I am of our student-athletes,” stated Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics David Blackburn.  “They put in countless hours in practice and in the weight room, and that same dedication and focus is evident in their academic endeavors.”

Overall Student-Athlete GPA Growth

Of the 276 student-athletes enrolled at UTC in the spring, 135 made the Dean’s List with a 3.2 or better GPA.  A school record 176 made the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, meaning 63% of all Mocs made at least a 3.0.  It is the 10th semester in a row at least half of the student-athletes at UTC scored a 3.0 and the first time over 60% reached that mark.

Chattanooga also had a school-record 37 make a perfect 4.0 GPA.  Some notables on that list include SoCon Women’s Golfer of the Year Jordan Britt, SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Taylor Hall, 2012 U.S. Amateur Champion Steven Fox, All-American and SoCon Cross Country/Track & Field Champion Teghan Henderson, SoCon Women’s Golf Champion Emily McLennan and SoCon Wrestling Champion Alex Hudson.

The women’s cross country team led all programs with a department record 3.85 GPA.  That just beat men’s cross country’s previous mark of 3.82 set last spring.  The women’s team also had a program record 18 on the Dean’s List while eight of the runners had a 4.0.

Men’s basketball (2.59), men’s cross country/track & field (3.71) and women’s golf (3.82) all set new program bests for team GPA, while women’s basketball team had a program record 11 on the Dean’s List.

“I also think it is also important to point out the work of our coaches and Student Support Services staff,” added Blackburn.  “A lot goes into reaching a goal like this and our coaches should be commended for creating a culture in their programs that promote academic success.  They set the tone in the way they recruit and run their programs, while our Academic Staff does an outstanding job supporting each of our student-athletes.”

2013-14 has been a banner academic year for the Mocs.  The men’s cross country team has the nation’s highest team GPA in the fall, while Davis Tull became the first Academic All-American in the history of the football program.  UTC set a school record with 20 individuals on the Winter Academic All-SoCon team and two Mocs programs were recently recognized for their high APR scores
