Summer Highlight Series: Gee McGhee is providing a weekly summer series highlighting the Chattanooga Mocs basketball program. This consists of a brief feature below and the attached highlight video from the 2012-13 season. This week’s spotlight shines on sophomore Gee McGhee.

Gee took Chattanooga by storm in his first season. His stellar premier included school records and All-Freshman Southern Conference honors. His jubilant personality and enthusiasm for the game endear him to Mocs fans everywhere.

McGhee ended up second on the squad in scoring to Z. Mason (14.9 ppg). He posted 12.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. He led the team in minutes played with a school freshman-record 927 (29.0 mpg) while starting every game as a true freshman.

He averaged 14.3 points, 4.4 boards and 2.6 assists per game in league play as he got better and better as the season continued. His ball control stats were exceptional for a wing with a 2.53 assist-to-turnover ratio and nine more steals than turnovers (28/19).

Here are a few of McGhee’s season highlights:
>Gee ranked among the SoCon leaders in scoring (20th) and steals (10th). He had nearly as many steals (43) as turnovers (47) and fashioned a 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.

>Set UTC freshman records for steals (43), minutes (927), 3pt FG made (38), 3pt FG attempted (125), FT made (120) and attempted (196) for a season. He tallied new game marks for FT made (13) and attempted (19), while tying steals in a game (4). He was just 12 points (386) shy of Keith Parker’s 1978 record amount of 398.

>Best game came on senior night where he was nearly un-guardable in the win over Elon. He had 24 points, eight rebounds and two assists in his 32 minutes on the floor. He hit five of eight shots including one for three behind the arc along with his record-setting free throw performance making 13 of 19.

>Recorded three 20-point games all in SoCon play. His first two came in back-to-back contests with 22 in the win over The Citadel followed by 20 in a narrow loss to College of Charleston.

>His 196 free throw attempts in 2012-13 is the sixth highest total in school history.
