Cross Country/Track Summer Update

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Running Mocs have a tough schedule throughout the school year but that does not stop them from competing throughout the year and some even continue the trend after graduation.

Assistant coach Anneli (Uys) Morrison participated in her first triathlon this summer with an impressive result while current runners took top honors in various races.

Anneli Morrison was a marquee runner for the Lady Mocs who earned all-conference honors in cross country as well as track. She is in her second season as an assistant for UTC and continues to train and run in various races.

After running the Sports Barn Sprint Triathlon twice, she decided to try her hand at a full tri. However, the Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon was amended to a duathlon when unusually heavy rainfall led to high water levels in the Tennessee River, cancelling the swim portion of the event.

She used a bike borrowed from her husband Tommy for the 42K bike ride and then ran the 10K run and finished first in the female beginner category and sixth overall among all women with a time of 2:13.24.

“It was tough, especially running after getting off the bike,” Morrison said. “My bum felt like I was coming down the home stretch of a 400m dash, but it was fun to try something new.

She ended up in 69th place overall with a time of 2:13:24 and that included a final 10K run of 39:50.

“It is a lot different than just running and I definitely need to train more on the bike, but I learned a lot. I need to teach my body how to run on fatigued legs and tight muscles.”

Paul Stuart edged teammate John Gilpin at the finish line of the Chattanooga Chase 8K in May while fellow Mocs runner Lucas Cotter finished right behind the pair for a 1-2-3 sweep of the race held on Chattanooga’s North Shore.

Stuart and Gilpin posted identical times of 25:45 with Stuart just hundreds of a second ahead while Cotter posted a time of 25:47 in the 47th running of the event through the hilly streets of North Chattanooga.

Also competing in the event was former Lady Moc Lanni Marchant. She was the top place finisher in the women’s division with a time of 27:16, good for 11th overall, but she wasn’t done there. She also won the women’s division of the 1 mile run with a time of 5:13, fourth overall.

Another former Moc in the race was Andy Highlander who took 16th overall with a time of 28:42 in a race that featured 253 runners.

Matthew Marshall of Signal Mountain posted a time of 16:12.58 to win the Riverbend Run 5K, nearly 27 seconds ahead of second place finisher Madison Yates (16:39.116) and Nicholas McCormick (16:48.781).

Former Moc Kevin Huwe posted a time of 17:25.223 placing fourth while Jan Gautier, wife of UTC head coach Bill Gautier, placed 18th overall with a time of 20:26.615.

Former UTC runner Lanni Marchant continues her running career with a 69th place overall finish in the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta. She ran the 10K event in a time of 32:46 and placed ninth in the women's division. She will run in next month’s marathon at the World Games in Moscow.
