CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's cross country team will host the PowerAde Invitational to open the 2011 season. The event will begin at 5:45 p.m. at the Moccasin Bend Race Course.
The Mocs were a third place selection by the Southern Conference coaches in a preseason poll. Head Coach Bill Guatier returns all-conference performers senior Chris Berry (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and sophomore Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) Cotter was the league's Freshman of the Year last season as was Berry in 2006. Senior Joshue Vasquez (Kingsport, Tenn.) bolsters up the lineup for the Mocs.
The women were selected to finish seventh in the preseason poll and return senior Tara Gietema (Knoxville, Tenn.) and juniors Mary Cumbee and Kathryn Stuart, both of Brentwood, Tenn. Gautier brings in a large contingent of newcomers to provide a boost to the squad that lost four seniors including all-conference performer Anneli Uys (Somerville, Australia). Uys moves into the assistant coach position left vacant by Patrick Hall who left to take another position.
Competing this weekend will be Jacksonville State, Lipscomb, Martin, Middle Tennessee and Tennessee State. The women will run a two-mile course while the men's race will be a 5-kilometer. The first race takes off at 5:45 p.m. at the Moccasin Bend Race Course with the second to follow immediately. Admission is free.
