NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Senior distance runner Chris Berry (Mufreesboro, Tenn.) ran to a fourth place finish at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic to lead the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's cross country team to a third place finish at Percy Warner Park Saturday morning.
Berry ran the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24:59.20 and teammate, sophomore Lucas Cotter (Collierville, Tenn.) was 10th overall with a time of 25:33.20. Mocs' junior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) was 12th and sophomore Mark Cole (McKenzie, Tenn.) placed 24th in the scoring results.
Cincinnati claimed the team title with 75 points and had the overall champion in Eric Finan who paced the field of 190 runners with a time of 24:25.90. The Bearcats placed three runners in the top 20 with Brock Oliver finishing fifth overall with a time of 25:12.10.
Alabama was second in the men's race 85 points led by second place finisher Carrison Kemei with a time of 24:35.60. Middle Tennessee's Justus David was third overall with a time of 24:40.10. The Blue Raiders finished fifth with a score of 143 behind instate foe Belmont's score of 131 points.
Lipscomb placed sixth overall followed by Memphis, Nashville Harriers, host Vanderbilt in ninth and Florida Gulf Coast 10th out of 22 teams.
Senior Tara Gietema (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed 17th overall in the women's 5-kilometer race with a time of 18:39.70. Newcomer Sarah White-Woerner (Ooltewah, Tenn.) was the Lady Mocs' second finisher in 52nd place with a time of 19:44.00. Morgan Buchanan placed 68th for Chattanooga with a time of 20:16.60 in a field of 194 runners.
Alabama claimed the team title in the women's race with 45 points, placing all five scoring runners in the Top 15. Middle Tennessee's Lucy Kapkiai ran unattached and paced the field with a time of 17:53.40 followed by Lipscomb's Tessa Hoefle at 18:05.40 and Ashley Lehman at 18:08.10. The Bisons placed second in the team scoring with 51 points. Belmont finished third with 80 points followed by Vanderbilt's B-team in fourth. Cincinnati was fifth followed by Jacksonville State, Memphis, Rhodes, Florida Gulf Coast and Marshall in 10th out of 23 teams.
The women will return to action Friday, Sept. 30 at the Tennessee Tech Invitational in Cookeville, Tenn., while the men will run at the Greater Louisville Classic the following day in Louisville, Ky.
