GREENVILLE, S.C. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Kayla Christopher (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) hit a jumper with 1:07 to play then iced the game with a pair of free throws less than a minute later to give the Lady Mocs a 60-57 win over Furman in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
Chattanooga junior Ashlen Dewart (Spartanburg, S.C.) put in a layup at the 2:21 mark to give the Lady Mocs the lead for good at 56-55. On the other end of the court, UTC grabbed a defensive board after a miss by Sarah Durdaller and then drew a Paladin foul.
Down the court, the Lady Mocs missed a jumper and a 3-point attempt but was able to grab both offensive rebounds to kick it out to Christopher for the jumper to go up 58-55.
Furman's Brittany Hodges made it to the free throw line with 34 seconds to play, drawing the Paladins to within one at 58-57. However, Christopher would make both of her free throws with 15 seconds to play for the final score. Brittany Hodges' last second 3-pointer from deep fell short and the Lady Mocs would come away with their 10th SoCon victory.
Chattanooga improved to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in league action while the Paladins fall to 8-12 on the year and 4-7 against the SoCon.
Neither team was able to get out to more than a three- or four-point lead throughout the first half and Chattanooga battled to a 32-30 halftime lead.
The start of the second half was all Furman as the Paladins went on a 9-0 run for its largest lead of the game at 39-32 with 15:12 to play. Junior Faith Dupree (Knoxville, Tenn.) ended the scoring drought with a short jumper to kick off an 11-2 run for UTC to put the Lady Mocs up 43-41 with 10:11 on the clock.
The lead bounced back and forth over the remainder of the half to include three ties and four lead changes. UTC outscored Furman 11-5 over the final 4:38 for the win.
Christopher was 5-12 from the field with two 3-pointers and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to lead the Lady Mocs with 16 points. Dewart was 6-of-9 for 13 points and three rebounds. Freshman Tatianna Jackson (Atlanta, Ga.) had eight points while juniors Taylor Hall (New Tazewell, Tenn.) and Alex Black (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Ka'Vonne Towns each tossed in six points. Towns had a team-best five rebounds as did senior Kylie Lambert (Etowah, Tenn.).
Furman was led by Brittany Hodges went 10-of-18 from the free throw line for a a game-high 18 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Teshia Griswold put in 15 points while Sarah Durdaller posted a game-high 10 rebounds.
Furman outrebounded Chattanooga 32-27 and held the advantage in the paint 24-16 while the Lady Mocs forced 21 Paladin turnovers resulting in 24 points. UTC's bench outpaced Furman 19-10 and the Lady Mocs scored six points off nine offensive rebounds compared to five points off nine boards for Furman.
