CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Lady Mocs softball team (24-20, 8-7 SoCon) hosts UNC Greensboro (30-11, 9-5 SoCon) Saturday and Sunday at Frost Stadium for a three-game series in the Scenic City. Saturday begins with a double-header at 1 and 4 p.m. before closing out the weekend Sunday at 2 p.m.
Saturday serves as Youth Day at the ball park. All children- eighth grade and below - will recieve free admission to the Lady Mocs double-header at Frost Stadium.
The Lady Mocs are coming off a tight 2-1 victory over Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn., as sophomore Taylor Deason (Clarksville, Tenn.) picked up her 16th win of the season and freshman Sam Taylor (Chickamauga, Ga.) extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
The Spartans are riding a four-game win streak, taking victories over Appalachian State, UNC Wilmington and North Carolina Central. Both of the UNCG wins over NC Central were run rules, 10-0 and 11-3.
Chattanooga goes into the weekend led by senior Kasey Tydingco (Fairfield, Calif.) as the first baseman bats .366 and leads the Lady Mocs with 28 RBI on 45 hits. Senior Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) follows up with a .342 average and a team-best 52 hits while freshman Sam Taylor continues to climb the statistical ladder. Taylor is now batting .294 with the aid of her 10-game hitting streak. The infielder-turned-outfielder is coming off a 2-for-3 game in Cookeville, Tenn. where she tripled to lead off the contest.
The pitching staff is led by Deason as she has now pitched in over 160 inning and tossed 12 complete games. The sophomore leads the staff with 132 strikeouts and only 59 walks. Freshmen Rachel Albritton (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Kaisey Carson (Indianapolis, Ind.) offer support for the ace both starting and relieving. Albritton is 6-4 on the season with a team-best 2.62 ERA while Carson is coming off a respectable start in Chaleston, S.C.
The Spartans are led by junior Katelyn Bedwell as the catcher bats .382 through 43 games played. Bedwell has recorded a team-leading 50 hits while freshman catcher Lindsay Thomas has been the powerhouse for UNCG. The freshman has blasted 14 home runs this season and driven in 34 runs. She has also tripled one and doubles nine times this season.
In the circle, UNCG relies on junior Raeanne Hanks as its ace. The right-hander is 17-5 on the season and has thrown a team-best 15 complete games. The junior has also recorded three saves and has logged 139.2 innings pitched. Sophomore Erica Navarette and freshman Nicole Thomas and Kelly Lupton has each pitched in less than 20 games this season behind the ace. Navarette is second on the squad with 61.1 innings pitched with seven wins.
