Marchant Breaks Canadian Marathon Record

Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga distance runner Lanni Marchant has continued running six years removed from her collegiate days and she is still making her mark on the running world.

In the summer of 2012, Marchant missed her chance to represent Canada in the Summer Olympics because her time was not up to the Canadian standards for qualifying of 2:29:55. In the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon, Marchant posted the ninth fastest marathon time by a female in Canada at 2:31.51, but it wasn’t good enough. She would have to try again.

And try she did. Last weekend, Marchant broke the Canadian marathon record with a time of 2:27:59 at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon topping the previous top mark of 2:28:36 set by Sylvia Ruegger 28 years ago. Along with her mother, Ruegger was at the finish line to congratulate Marchant on her accomplishment.

This is the fifth marathon of her career. Her last was at the IAAF World Championships where she represented Canada last summer in Moscow, Russia. She finished 44th with multiple runners dropping out from the extreme heat.

Teammate Krista DuChene also topped the marathon record with a time of 2:28:32.

While at UTC, Marchant was a highly decorated athlete despite running alongside All-American Shannon Wommack and NCAA qualifier Kathleen Turchin. Marchant was the 2007 Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year and recipient of the Scrappy Moore Award in 2006. She was an eight-time SoCon Champion and won both the 5K and 10K at the 2007 league Outdoor Championships.

Marchant qualified for the NCAA Championship three times over her career in cross country and outdoor track and field  and was twice named to the NCAA South Region team for her performance.

As well as the athletic accomplishments, Marchant excelled in the academic arena. She was a three time USTFCCCA Academic All-American, a two-time NCAA All-American and received the Dayle May Academic Achievement Award at UTC as the senior with the highest GPA.
