GoMocs.com Traffic Records Pace Strong Coverage

GoMocs.com, the official website for the Athletics Department at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, broke traffic records for the sixth year in a row, based on 2013-14 year-end numbers that were released today.  UTC saw its homepage welcome more than 1 million unique visitors for the first time.

Chattanooga began tracking its online traffic in 2007-08 and has diligently worked to grow its numbers and exposure.  There were 1,537,611 unique visitors to the site between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014.  As seen in the chart below, that is an 80% increase from the previous fiscal year.

“The growth in our online presence has been tremendous over the last few years,” stated Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics David Blackburn.  “We have a very strong fan base that creates a demand for information on our teams, student-athletes and coaches.  Our staff does a great job of promoting our successes in competition, in the classroom and in the community, all of which attracts more visitors to our website.”

Not only are unique visitors up, but pageviews have also more than doubled over the last two years.  Last year, GoMocs.com topped seven million pageviews for the first time.  That is a 29% increase from last season’s total of just over six million.

When measuring traffic, a quick overview of the terms used is needed to clearly understand how many people are visiting GoMocs.com.  A pageview is defined as a request to load a single HTML file of an internet site.  One user can record numerous pageviews during a single visit to a site.  GoMocs.com’s growth in pageviews is shown in the chart below.

There are a number of factors that go into the growth of GoMocs.com, beginning with the success of the teams on the field.  The Mocs won seven Southern Conference titles in five sports in 2013-14.  UTC’s 120th place showing in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was the second best in school history and six Mocs were named SoCon Athletes of the Year.

A strong fan base also helps.  UTC led the SoCon in attendance in men’s and women’s basketball and averaged nearly 10,000 fans per home football game.  That interest alone can generate a huge amount of traffic before and after games.

Finally, UTC hosts a number of big events throughout the season that draw visitors from other schools.  TheSouthernScuffle.com was brought under the GoMocs.com umbrella for the first time in 2014.  The 32-team wrestling event had a huge following and the traffic from that site was a part of GoMocs.com’s final numbers.

Softball’s Frost Classic home page also lives on GoMocs.com.  That 10-team tournament drew the eyes of visiting team fans looking for live scoring, box scores and broadcasts from the 25 games played over two days at Frost Stadium and Warner Park.

The online interest in the Mocs is mirrored in the extensive media coverage UTC Athletics receives throughout the season.  There were over 3,800 stories written on the Mocs in 2012-13.  That was bolstered by the search and hiring coverage of Blackburn, men’s basketball coach Will Wade and women’s basketball coach Jim Foster.

This year’s numbers dipped slightly to 3,751 stories on the Mocs in print, online and on television.  That is still maintaining a tremendous presence in the media, locally, regionally and nationally.  As seen in th graph below, UTC has enjoyed over 3,000 stories each year since tracking began in 2010-11.

Despite being in a region dominated by the Southeastern Conference and heavy influences from Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia, the Mocs receive excellent coverage from the Chattanooga media.  The community boasts a thriving newspaper, three television stations, online publications, a student paper and a host of other outlets dedicated to covering UTC athletics.

The Mocs self-generate most of their media through GoMocs.com, the department’s official website.  There were 1,020 stories posted on GoMocs.com in 2013-14, a 14% increase from last season and just off the record of 1,024 set in 2012-13.

As the official athletics website for Chattanooga Athletics, GoMocs.com is the best source for all information on the Mocs.  It is also a viable advertising avenue for any company looking to partner with a collegiate athletics program.  For more information on advertising on GoMocs.com, contact Mocs Sports Properties General Manager Greg Gilmer (423-425-5801 - ggilmer@mocssportsproperties.com).
