Chattanooga Lady Mocs Basketball Postgame Notes
UNCG at Chattanooga
McKenzie Arena - Chattanooga, Tenn.
Monday - Feb. 11, 2013
Chattanooga Head Coach Wes Moore
Thoughts on the game
"Got to give UNCG a lot of credit, they had a good plan and did a nice job of getting back door cuts against our defense. They made it real hard for us to run our stuff and bodied up on us on defense. They doubled-teamed us in the post and you have to give them a lot of credit. We had 19 turnovers and we're going to have to do a much better job of that next time on the court. Rebounding-wise, we did a good job at crashing the boards and containing them in that aspect. Ashlen was big with 10 rebounds and 19 points, then Kayla Christopher hit some big three's for us when we were struggling. Jackson did great in her first start with eight rebounds, and Faith with 10 points in 12 minutes was fantastic. Again, tonight was another great team effort which led to a win."
Thoughts on Kylie Lambert's limited play
"It did hurt us some, but we're trying to do what we can to help Kylie hang in there down the stretch. I know she is feeling a lot of pain, and we're trying to pace her as well as ourselves. We were hoping to try and get away without her playing, but I felt her senior leadership was needed. Her status is day-to-day and we'll continue to do the best we can with it."
Thoughts on Kayla Christopher's performance
"Well, we're always trying to get her looks. You can draw up plays all day long, but players have to make the plays and knock the shots down. It's pretty amazing, as much as we were struggling, for her to keep her head up. She did the same thing Saturday against Elon, just taking over in the second half and refusing to lose. That is what seniors and great leaders do. Kayla is quiet, but she understands the game extremely well and has a feel for it."
Thoughts on the play of the freshmen
"Payne makes plays on defense. She takes care of the ball for the most part and knows where it needs to go. We had that one backdoor cut that got away from us, but she is maturing right before our eyes. We knew in the recruiting process that Tatianna would be a great player and she is living up to that. She is still a freshman and there were some break downs on the first half where we felt she didn't have the urgency she needed to have defensively."
Thoughts on the difference between winning and losing being someone getting hot
"No doubt, Collins for UNCG definitely got hot and that's what happens. You have a night where your kids don't hit tough shots they normally make and they have somebody who gets hot. Right now are the dog days of the season. With pre-season since August, conditioning, lifting, and practice since October, you've been through a long grind and March madness is still a bit too far to get excited about. You've got kids right now who are trying to fight through things. This is the time of year where you really have to hang in there and suck it up."
Kayla Christopher, senior, guard
Thoughts on the 14-0 run early in the second half
"It was a big stretch for us. It was important for us to step up and hit some shots. We knew we could get back into it. It just gave us the confidence to get back in the game."
Thoughts on being tied for the second-most three point shots made in UTC history
"It's crazy but I thank God for giving me the opportunity to do it. Just to even be mentioned with those names is pretty cool. But we still want more."
Thoughts on her role as a senior
"When I need to step up and hit some shots then I'm going to try and do that. As a senior, I feel like a lot of that when the team needs me. I need to step up and deliver for them. That's what I am supposed to do. It's my time. It's my last go around. It's basically on mine and Kylie's shoulders to get it done."
Ashlen Dewart, junior, forward
Thoughts on the physicality of the game
"I think the past few games have been a lot more physical than they were at the beginning of the season. But that's just something that you have to adjust to and you just have to become tougher down inside. With Kayla shooting the way she was shooting helped me out a lot because they couldn't really trap. I think our guards did a great job tonight."
