Matt Pope joined the UTC Athletics Department in January, 2001 as the Assistant Athletics Director for Administration and Business. He was promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations, Finance and Marketing in December, 2002, and was promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director of Administration and Internal Operations during the summer of 2010.
As the Senior Associate Athletics Director, Pope's
primary responsibilities include the oversight and supervision of all
departmental fiscal operations totaling nearly $12 million. He provides long-range planning and financial
forecasting, develops departmental policy, oversees game and personnel contract
executions and provides oversight for the administration of grants-in-aid to
student-athletes. He is also the departmental liaison to the UT Board of Trustees as well as other university departments and committees.
He is the primary administrator for a variety of sports
at Chattanooga. The list includes football, men’s basketball, wrestling, men’s
and women’s golf and men’s and women’s track and cross country.
Pope is the Director of Game Operations for both the football
and wrestling programs. He also oversees the administrative functions of
Sports Medicine, Facilities and Operations and Athletics Performance. He
is the primary departmental representative and liaison to various University
agencies and committees.
During his tenure, he was the tournament site director for the annual NCAA Football Championship Series (FCS) National Championship Game at Finley Stadium from 2001 through the 2009 contest, the last in Chattanooga. Pope was the Tournament Manager for the 2010 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at The Honors Course and 2008 NCAA East Regional Men's Golf Championships held at Council Fire.
In May, 2006, Pope held the role of Interim Athletics Director upon the retirement of Steve Sloan. Since 2005, he has chaired the Southern Conference Wrestling committee and was the 2008 and 2012 Southern Conference Tournament Director, hosted in Chattanooga. He is also the tournament director for the annual Southern Scuffle.
Prior to his arrival at UTC, Pope worked in the Athletics Business Office at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Before working at UNC, he handled all fiscal matters and game operations as an Associate Athletic Director for Business Affairs at Western Kentucky. Before heading to WKU, he was the Athletic Business Manager at Arkansas-Little Rock.
Pope is a member of the College Athletic Business Managers Association (CABMA), the International Collegiate Licensing Association (ICLA), the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).
A two-time graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Pope earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education in 1989 and a Master of Arts degree in Sports Administration in 1994. Pope is also a graduate of the Sport Management Institute's Executive Program held on the campuses of Notre Dame in 1998, and South Carolina in 1999.
A native of Durham, N.C., Pope and his wife, Claudia, also a North Carolina graduate, have a daughter, Anna, and a son, Tyler.
