Members of the UTC Community:

The Department of Athletics at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is currently undergoing NCAA Cycle 3 Recertification. This process began in the fall of 2010 and is expected to conclude in the spring of 2012. At this stage of the recertification process, final reports of the institution's Self-Study are being submitted to the NCAA for review. This coming fall, an NCAA certification team will visit the campus to further assess the athletics program prior to determining our future certification status.

During the past year, a dedicated group of faculty, staff, and students have worked hard to conduct a self-study of the UTC Intercollegiate Athletics program. This self-study is mandated by the NCAA and focuses on seven areas of evaluation:

     1. Governance and Commitment to Rules Compliance

a. Operating Principle 1.1 - Institutional Control, Presidential Authority and Shared Responsibilities

b. Operating Principle 1.2 - Rules Compliance

     2. Academic Integrity

a. Operating Principle 2.1 - Academic Standards

b. Operating Principle 2.2 - Academic Support

     3. Gender/Diversity Issues and Student-Athlete Well-Being

a. Operating Principle 3.1 - Gender Issues

b. Operating Principle 3.2 - Diversity Issues

c. Operating Principle 3.3 - Student-Athlete Well-Being

The purpose of the NCAA certification process is to ensure the NCAA's fundamental commitment to integrity in intercollegiate athletics. The program is structured to achieve its goal in several ways:

  • 1. By opening the affairs of athletics to the university community and public.
  • 2. By setting standards (called operating principles) for the operation of Division I athletics programs.
  • 3. By putting tough sanctions in place for institutions that fail to conduct a comprehensive self-study or to correct deficiencies.

An effective self-study benefits the institution by providing self-awareness, affirmation and opportunities to improve.

At this time, we invite the community to participate in this process by reviewing the self-study reports and providing us with additional feedback. Please take some time to look all seven reports at the following web address:

Any concerns or comments you might have are welcomed. Please email your reactions to Dr. Paul Watson, UC Foundation Professor of Psychology and Chair of the NCAA Athletics Self-Study Committee, at paul-watson@utc.edu. Again, your reactions are welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to assist us in this effort to strengthen our commitment to integrity, academic success, diversity and student-athlete well-being. Go Mocs!

All the best,

Rick Hart
Director of Athletics
