Chattanooga freshman Kelsey Coots (Huntsville, Ala.) advanced to the finals of the Flight 5 Singles at the Auburn Invitational today. She is joined by the doubles team of sophomore Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) and freshman Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) as Lady Mocs still competing in main draw action this weekend.
Coots opened with a (6-2, 6-2) win over Georgia Southern's Caitlin Kitchen. She followed that up with a (6-3, 6-3) win over Kennesaw State's Tess Lagerkvist to advance to tomorrow's finals. She will face Auburn's Ashley Kitchen in the championship match.
"Kelsey had a good start to her career," stated UTC head coach Jeff Clark. "She posted two good wins and is playing for a championship."
Chadwell and Jones opened doubles action with an 8-4 win over Northwestern State's Tatiana Larina and Andrea Nedorostova in the Flight 1 Doubles. They will face Kennesaw State's Alex Apostu and Virginie Stein in the semifinals tomorrow.
"It was a long hot day," added Clark. "I think we definitely got better as a team, but we still have a lot of room for improvement. We had some good wins in singles and doubles and hopefully we can continue to build on that."
Chadwell went 1-1 in the Flight 2 Singles. She will face Tulane's Emma Levy in the third place match tomorrow. Freshmen Katie Polk (Woodstock, Ga.) and Jovana Pecovski (Apitan, Serbia) also went 1-1 in singles. Polk is in the third place match in Flight 6 while Pecovski will play for third in Flight 7.
Action will conclude tomorrow with play beginning at 8:00 a.m. Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for complete results.
