CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs (1-2) scored 21 first quarter points, cruising to a 35-0 win in their home opener Thursday night against Glenville State (1-2). The story of the game was the UTC defense which held the Pioneers to just 78 yards of total offense which is the fewest yards allowed since giving up 68 to VMI on November 20, 1987 (31-0 win).
The effort included a meager 17 rushing yards on 21 carries for GSC while the Pioneers passed for just 61 yards on 13 of 24 attempts. The 78 yards came in 45 snaps which is just 1.7 yards per play.
Davis Tull (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the leader with four tackles and two sacks. Wes Dothard (Carrollton, Ga.) had a team-high six tackles with an interception. The Mocs had four sacks and caused two turnovers and six pass breakups.
On the flip side, Chattanooga got what it wanted on offense. The Mocs ran for 230 yards and threw for 247. The 477 yards of total offense was a yard shy of 400 more than the defense allowed.
Marquis Green (Palmetto, Fla.) had a game-high 59 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns. Jacob Huesman (Chattanooga, Tenn.) added 256 yards of total offense. He accumulated 210 passing with two touchdowns while rushing for another 46 (7 carries).
UTC scored on its first three possessions. The defensive domination led to incredible field position. Those drives were of 49, 42 and 36 yards.
The quarterbacks got the Mocs on the board first. Huesman found Terrell Robinson (South Pittsburg, Tenn.) deep down the right sideline for a 44-yard strike on the second play of the first drive. Just over five minutes later Huesman hit Faysal Shafaat (Orlando, Fla.) on a 10-yard catch-and-run to make it 14-0.
Keon Williams (Chattanooga, Tenn.) capped off the first quarter barrage with a one-yard plunge to make it 21-0. Williams had 42 yards rushing for the game on nine rushes.
Green scored the rest of the Mocs points with two second half scores in the first multi-touchdown game of his career. He scored from five and eight yards out in the third and fourth quarter, respectively.
Rahmann Lee led the Pioneers with 26 yards on nine carries. He also had three catches for nine yards. Terry Reese paced the defense with a game-high 14 tackles and an interception in the end zone that stopped the Mocs' initial drive in the third quarter.
Nine different Mocs recorded a reception tonight including both quarterbacks. Tommy Hudson (Moultrie, Ga.) led the team with six for 64 yards.
