The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team wrapped up Day 1 at the 2012 Steve Baras Fall Classic at the Champions Club today. Seniors Manuel Barroetavena and Ankit Chopra are still alive in the main draw after posting two singles wins.
Barroetavena, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, opened with a (6-3, 6-2) win over Jacksonville State's Axel Sundberg in the top flight. He followed that up with a three-set win over Kennesaw State's Alex Toliver in the quarterfinals (6-2, 3-6, 6-2).
Chopra (Chandigrah, India) posted a (6-2, 6-1) first round win over Lee's Flavio Costa in the No. 3 Flight. He finished the day with a (6-0, 6-4) win against KSU's Jorge Wilton in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Pavels Grigorjevs (Riga, Latvia) won his first bout, a (6-1, 6-3) victory over JSU's Felipe Watanabe also in the No. 3 Flight. He had a tough match in the quarterfinals against East Tennessee State's Jorge Varon. He pushed the top-seeded Varon to three sets before falling in a nail-biter (7-5, 3-6, 7-5).
Senior Stephen Crofford (Franklin, Tenn.) had a first round win over JSU's Guilherme Pansera (6-3, 6-0). He was defeated out of the No. 4 draw with a (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) loss to UNCG's Will Albright. Senior Chris Smith (Johnson City, Tenn.) and William Disterdick (Hixson, Tenn.) are still alive in the No. 1 and No. 4 consolation draws, respectively.
Disterdick and Grigorjevs teamed up for the Mocs only win in four doubles matches. They posted an 8-6 victory over Lee's Costa and Patrick Kim in the No. 4 Flight.
"We had some good results today," stated head coach Carlos Garcia. "Manny and Ankit played well in singles and they still have a chance to win a draw. I was looking for a better performance in doubles, but there is a lot of tough competition here. Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and continue to get better."
Action resumes on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (E.D.T.) at the Champions Club. Be sure to check back to GoMocs.com for complete results.
