University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior defensive back Kadeem Wise has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced today. Wise led an impressive overall effort by the Mocs defense in a 28-10 win at No. 10 The Citadel last weekend.
The Bulldogs entered the game ranked 20th in the nation in scoring (34.5 ppg), but were limited to a season-low 10 points by UTC. Wise, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., tallied eight tackles and picked off a pass in the fourth quarter to thwart a Bulldogs' drive inside UTC territory.
It was Wise's first interception of the season and the ninth of his career. He is now tied with head coach Russ Huesman (1978-81) for sixth all-time in career interceptions at UTC.
This is the first Defensive Player of the Week award for Wise. He won SoCon Freshman of the Week honor after picking off two passes in the Western Carolina game in 2010.
Saturday's victory gave the Mocs their biggest road win over a ranked opponent since topping No. 10 Appalachian State in 1983. UTC improved to 2-3 overall and evened its SoCon record at 1-1. The Mocs have this weekend off before visiting Furman on Saturday, Oct. 13. The 1:30 p.m. (E.D.T.) game against the Paladins airs live on ESPN3.
Wofford's Eric Breitenstein was the Offensive Player of the Week, while Appalachian State's Sean Price was the Freshman recipient. Furman's Jerodis Williams was tabbed the Special Teams honoree. The players of the week are selected by the conference office.
