CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga Mocs senior Steven Fox
(Hendersonville, Tenn.) shot one-under par 71 in the opening round of the World
Amateur Team Championship in Antalya, Turkey today. Fox and his teammates have
the United States in first place at 13-under par 131.
Fox's 71 was actually the team's drop score as Chris
Williams (Washington) and Justin Thomas (Alabama) got the Americans off to a
fast start. Williams had the low round of the day with a 64 (-8) while Thomas is
tied for third at 67 (-5). Fox is tied for 36th.
"Today went alright," Fox said. "I hit it well, just didn't
make many putts. Just hit a lot of edges all day.
"I'm ready for tomorrow though," he continued. "I'm playing
well...just waiting for everything to come together. The team played great. If we
can drop a one under each day I'd say we can win it."
Fox was very consistent with two birdies and 15 pars on his
card. The lone blemish was a bogey on the par three third hole. He and his
mates have a four-shot lead on Mexico in second (-9) and five on the Republic
of Korea in third at eight under.
He is scheduled to tee off at 4:55 a.m., Eastern Time, as
the Americans play with Chinese Taipei and Germany. Live scoring is available here.
