CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team snared a late penalty kick to force overtime but fell 2-1 to Appalachian State Friday night at Finley Stadium in Southern Conference action. The Mocs fall to 2-8-1 overall and 0-5 in league play while the Mountaineers improve to 7-5-0 on the year and 4-1 in SoCon action.
Following a foul by Appalachian State in the box, senior Becca Smith (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) pushed a penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the goal past ASU's keeper Megan Roberson to tie the match 1-1 in the 87th minute forcing overtime.
The Mountaineers got on the board at the 34:54 mark of the game on a goal by Julia Holz. Holz took a pass from Jamie Lockie and her shot toward the goal was blocked by Chattanooga keeper Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.), but she was unable to pull the ball in and Holz picked up the rebound for the first score of the game.
Smith's score sent the game into overtime with each team taking just one shot at the goal in the extra period but it would be Samantha Childress' shot for the Mountaineers in the 100th minute to settle the game at 2-1.
Appalachian State outshot Chattanooga 19-6 with an 8-5 shots on goal advantage. Thomas recorded six saves on the night while Roberson made four grabs, including one in overtime, for the Mountaineers.
The Mocs will return to the pitch Sunday afternoon hosting Western Carolina. The match is set to kick off at 2 p.m. Live stats and streaming video will be available at GoMocs.com.
