CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-- Chattanooga volleyball's Julimar Alvarado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was named the Southern Conference's Freshman of the Week for her performance over the weekend against the College of Charleston and The Citadel. It is her first SoCon weekly honor.
On the weekend, Alvarado averaged 3.625 kills per set. Her 29 kills and 75 attacks over the two-day period was good for a .267 hitting percentage. Alvarado helped guide the Mocs to their fifth SoCon win on Suday with a grueling 3-2 victory over The Citadel.
The outside hitter's 27 kills against The Citadel set a new season and career-best, and is a team-high for the season. She registered a .300 hitting percentage in the match, her second best hitting percentage on the season, on 60 attacking attempts. Julimar also recorded three digs against the Bulldogs.
On the season, Alvarado ranks second on the team with 169 kills. She is averaging a Chattanooga-best 2.68 kills per set.
"I was very happy with the way Juli responded over the weekend," Head Coach Travis Filar said. "I don't think she got the swings she wanted against Charleston and she struggled a bit offensively, but she came back strong against The Citadel. The Bulldogs are a much improved team from the past and they are tenacious on defense and blocking. They are a hard team to score on, but she handled it well and took attacks where she could."
Alvarado and the Mocs return to action this weekend as Chattanooga hosts Davidson and Georgia Southern Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at Maclellan Gym.
