CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs have had quite a 2012 on the golf course. UTC is also making waves off it with it 2013 recruiting class. A total of four signed National Letters of Intent to join the Mocs in the fall of 2013.
UTC signed locally, regionally and internationally with this class. Ewan Scott of St. Andrews, Scotland is a major highlight of the class along with Knoxville's Stuart Thomas. Local signees Andrew Weathers (McCallie) and Brooks Thomas (Ringgold) round out the early signing group.
"This is as excited as I have ever been about a recruiting class," Head Coach Mark Guhne stated. "You are always looking forward to working with the young men you bond with while recruiting, and this group has a chance to be very special."
Scott won the Scottish Hydro Boys' Order of Merit as the top junior golfer in his homeland. His 840 points easily out-distanced his nearest competition by 202 points. He posted wins at the Golf Data Lab Scottish Youths Open Stroke Play Championship, Fife Boys Stroke Play and the Faldo Junior Series Scottish Qualifier.
In all, he had nine top fives with his three wins, two seconds, two thirds and two fifths. His runner-ups came at the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys Championship and the Faldo Series Grand Final.
Not to be outdone, Stuart Thomas won the TSSAA Class AAA State Championship medalist honors in 2012 for Farragut High School. He was highly-recruited in the Southeast being contacted by several SEC and ACC programs.
Thomas had two wins in 2012. Along with the state title, he captured the 2012 PrepXtra Masters in July. He made quite a splash in 2011 reaching match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur making the round of 32.
Weathers won the 2012 Chattanooga City Junior Championship. He was runner-up at the TSSAA Division II Class AA State Championship. He also had top five at the AAJGT River Pines event last December ending up fourth.
Brooks Thomas rounds out the group. He won his sectional qualifying for the U.S. Junior Am in June shooting three-under par at Old Fort Golf Club (Murfreesboro, Tenn.). Thomas played in 13 events in the last calendar year with two wins, six top fives and eight top 10s.
His other win was the AAJGT Stonebridge event in April. He was runner-up at the AAJGT Avalon tourney and finished third at Bear Trace, Players Championship and Willowbrook AAJGT events. His low round of 67 came at the AJGA Music CIty Junior in a seventh-place effort.
