CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga Mocs senior Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) is in Miami, Fla., preparing to represent the United States on Copa de las Americas at Doral Resort and Spa. The Copa de las Americas includes competitors from North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
Fox, the 2012 United States Amateur Champion, headlines a strong USA contingent. World No. 1 Chris Williams (Washington) joins Fox on the men's squad, while Lindy Duncan (Duke) and Erynne Lee (Cal) round out the women's contingent. Fox and Williams combined with Alabama's Justin Thomas to bring home the Eisenhower Trophy at the 2012 World Amateur Team Championship in October.
There are three 72-hole competitions in the event covering four days, January 3-6. There are men's and women's as well as an overall championship.
Fox and his teammates are playing on one of the famed venues on the PGA Tour, the TPC Blue Monster Course. It adds to the amazing list of courses Fox's epic U.S. Am win is tied to. It starts with famed Cherry Hills Country Club where he won the Havemeyer Trophy. It's the same location Phil Mickleson captured his U.S. Am title in 1990.
His win at Cherry Hills, where he joins its Hall of Champions with Mickleson, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus among other, offers an opportunity to compete on legendary courses. He plays in his first PGA Tour event later this month is the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. He is also invited to the Masters (Augusta National), U.S. Open (Merion G.C.) and British Open (Muirfield).
This is the fifth edition of the Copa de las Americas dating back to 2003. The U.S. won the women's team and overall titles in 2007 and 2010, the men's in 2007 and overall in 2007 and 2010.
This is the first time the Copa de las Americas tees off in the United States. Puerto Rico (2003 - Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort), Mexico (2005 - El Tigre Club de Golf), Canada (2007 - Beacon Hall Golf Club) and Argentina (2010 - Buenos Aires G.C.) hosted the first four.
