The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team opens its 2013 spring schedule with a pair of matches this weekend. The Lady Mocs host Kennesaw State on Friday and Belmont on Saturday to kick off their dual match season.
UTC welcomes the Owls to the Hixson Racquet Club on Friday, Jan. 25, at 6:00 p.m. (E.S.T.). The Bruins visit the Hixson Racquet Club on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2:00 p.m. Live scoring is available for both matches on the women's tennis schedule page on GoMocs.com.
Chattanooga is coming off a 16-6 record in 2012, the most wins for the program since 1999. Head coach Jeff Clark is in the sixth year of his second stint as head coach of the Lady Mocs. He is five wins shy (95-84) of 100 dual victories in nine total years as head coach at UTC.
"We are excited about starting our season on Friday night," stated Clark. "We face a good, experienced team in Kennesaw State. I know our girls will be ready to play."
UTC returns four letter winners, while adding five newcomers to the 2013 roster. Senior Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.) is a three-time All-Southern Conference selection and had a 15-7 dual record at No. 1.
Sophomore Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) is also back after earning SoCon Freshman of the Year honors with a 16-5 dual record. She was 7-1 at No. 2 and 8-2 in SoCon matches.
Junior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) is a two-year starter who was 11-7 in 2012. Sophomore Claire Mulyadi (Semarang, Indonesia) joined the team in January and went 9-8 in singles in the spring.
The Lady Mocs newcomers are listed as the No. 9 mid-major recruiting class in the country by TennisRecruiting.net. This group includes four-star signees Kelsey Coots (Huntsville, Ala.), Katie Polk (Woodstock, Ga.) and Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.), as well as three-star prospect Alison Storie (Johnson City, Tenn.), and Oklahoma State transfer Jovana Pecovski (Apatin, Serbia).
Jones led the Lady Mocs with an 11-2 singles record in the fall. She was also 7-3 in doubles action. Coots went 8-3 in singles play with a 7-2 record in doubles. Polk was solid in doubles at 7-1 and also had a 7-2 singles mark.
UTC posted a tough 5-2 win over KSU in last year's meeting on Feb. 25 at the Champions Club. Nuirk and Mulyadi both had wins at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively. Chadwell and Flynn led UTC to the doubles point with a win at No. 1.
The Lady Mocs scored a 7-0 shutout win in last year's meeting with Belmont on Feb. 4 in Nashville, Tenn. Nurik, Chadwell and Flynn all had singles wins, while Nurik and Chadwell teamed up for a doubles victory.
