CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs football squad had its first scrimmage during spring drills on a gorgeous afternoon at Finley Stadium. Head Coach Russ Huesman and his staff put the squad through its paces in a controlled environment.
Terrell Robinson (South Pittsburg, Tenn.) found Troy Dye (Hendersonville, Tenn.) for 28 yards down the middle of the field for the first score. That play followed a 21-yard run by Keon Williams (Chattanooga, Tenn.).
Kendrix Huitt (Atlanta, Ga.) was the star of the next series. He busted loose for a 27-yard scampers. That put the ball on the eight. Marquis Green (Palmetto, Fla) completed the drive himself running left into the end zone.
Robinson worked his magic. On a third-and-20 at the defense’s 47, he found Tray James (College Park, Ga.) streaking down the left sideline. The play went for 37 yards to the 10 setting up Williams. Williams bullied his way for eight yards up the middle and followed with a two-yard plunge into the endzone off left tackle.
Tolerance Shepherd (Fitzgerald, Ga.) had a big run late in the scrimmage. He was stopped up the middle and broke the play outside the left end for 19 yards to the six yard line. The defense held strong leading to a 20-yard Henrique Ribeiro (Chattanooga, Tenn.) field goal.
Nick Pollard (Nashville, Tenn.) hit 31 (twice) and 41-yard field goals on the day. Both Pollard and Ribeiro hit field goals in the overtime drill to end the scrimmage.
Defensively, the defensive line was impressive. Stalwarts such as Davis Tull (Knoxville, Tenn.), Wes Dothard (Carrollton, Ga.) and Kadeem Wise (Lawrenceville, Ga.) were allowed very few snaps to get a better look at the depth on that side of the ball.
Dean Haynes (Tunnel Hill, Ga.) had a big hit on Al Thompson (Brentwood, Tenn.) on a reverse. Dothard made a good break on the ball to bust up a third-down pass. Muhasibi Wakeel (Decatur, Ga.) picked up a fumble and would have taken it to the house had the play not been blown dead mid-return.
Statistics were not accumulated due to the controlled nature of the event. Nonetheless, there was a lot to talk about after play completed.
Head Coach Russ Huesman – “I think I took away that neither side came out on top, and I think that’s probably a good thing. A lot of good things offensively and defensively so you leave thinking it’s a pretty good day. Until you see the film you never know what to expect. I thought Kenny Huitt looked really good running the football. Derrick Lott looked active on the defensive side of the ball.”
Junior QB/WR Terrell Robinson – “I think it’s a great offense. (The scrimmage) gives me a chance to learn the terminology, but I think everyone is learning the terminology pretty quick. It’s very simple, and we just want to get better each and every day.”
Senior CB Kadeem Wise – “I think we’re looking good, but we got a long ways to go. We got to keep working hard, and keep putting in the work day in and day out. We got some starters back, but we still got to develop some young kids. Some redshirt freshmen are going to have play, so they are going to have to step up. So we’re trying to get their minds right to get them ready for it.”
