CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga Mocs sophomore Agathe Sauzon (Valence, France) was named Southern Conference Golfer of the Month by the league office Friday. Sauzon posted two top 10’s during April to earn the award.
Sauzon’s big splash came in the second of her two April appearances capturing the SoCon Championship leading Chattanooga to its fourth straight team title. She shot two-over par 218 tying for first with Mary Chandler Bryan from College of Charleston.
The playoff headed to the first hole, a par four dogleg right. Bryan was first to hit after both drives found the fairway. The Cougars freshman hit the green leaving a 30-foot birdie putt. Sauzon lined up her shot from 96 yards out and hit her 52 degree wedge to within three feet. Bryan’s putt came up just short setting up an easy par. Sauzon dropped her birdie putt for the win.
It was the third consecutive conference medalist for the Mocs. Sauzon follows Emma de Groot (2011) and teammate Jordan Britt (2012) in the champions line.
That performance came after a great start to the month. She fired a one-over 217 with rounds of 72, 72 and 73 to end up tied for eighth at the Web.com Intercollegiate. She was named SoCon Golfer of the Week on April 10 after posting the team’s best 54-hole total since Christine Wolf fired 209 (-7) in a winning effort at the 2011 JMU Eagle Landing Invitational.
She shot three-over par for her 108 April holes. The 435 total is the best two-tourney total since Emma de Groot also shot plus three with a composite 429 in 2011 at the SunTrust Gator Women’s (216) and JMU Eagle Landing (213) Invites.
This is the third SoCon award of 2013 for the Mocs. Emily McLennan (Queensland, Australia) also earned Golfer of the Week honors on March 13. The team is preparing for the NCAA East Regional next Thursday through Saturday, May 9-11.
