CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team announces the additions of spring signee Hannah Merkle (Parker, Colo.) and freshman transfer Callie Hildebrand (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) to round out the 2013 signing class. With Hildebrand and Merkle added to the roster, six will join the Mocs volleyball family along with Kendall Sexton (Orlando, Fla.), Emily Morrison (Norcross, Ga.), Anne Bachmann (Lincoln, Neb.) and Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) – all of which signed in November.

Merkle is a four-year letter-winner from Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colo., under Head Coach Sally Moos. While with the Bruins, Merkle was named first team All-Conference 5-A and was selected to the Colorado All-State Team in 2012. While named team MVP, the libero was also named the Bruins captain for her senior year.

“She is someone I started watching early on and I am excited about what she can bring to the court,” Head Coach Travis Filar said. “She is going to make the quality of our first contacts extremely high. That comes from serving, passing and digging. She is very consistent and even-keel on the court as a competitor and is an extremely dynamic and strong athlete. She is going to give us great depth at the libero position going into the 2013 season.”

Hildebrand joins the Mocs after spending one semester at Gardner-Webb University. The 5-foot-10 outside hitter returns to Chattanooga where she once wore red and blue for the Signal Mountain High School Eagles before wearing it for Bulldogs. The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native played in 52 sets in 2012 and recorded 55 kills in her first collegiate season along with 68 digs and five blocks.

“Callie has been with us since January,” Filar said. “She has been able to practice with us all spring and is a great addition to our family. We are excited that she has chosen to return to Chattanooga and play for a home-town crowd. She is a strong attacker but she is also a smart attacker. She understands importance of bettering the ball and keeping the ball in play when things aren’t perfect. She adds a lot of depth and is a great addition to the outside hitter’s position.”

The incoming-sophomore was a four-year letter winner at Signal Mountain for Head Coach Jennifer Redman and lead the Eagles to three district and two regional championships. A three-time All-Region and two-time All-State selection, Hildebrand was named State Championship MVP in 2010 as the Eagles claimed the State Championship. Hildebrand was a two-time Chattanooga Times Free Press “Best of Preps” honoree.
