BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- Five different players scored for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team Sunday afternoon in the third game of the Under Armour Border Classic hosted by Gardner-Webb. The Mocs improve to 3-3 on the year while the Bulldogs move to 3-6-1 overall.
“The beauty of our goals today, was that they were all team goals,” UTC Head Coach J.D. Kyzer said. “None were by someone alone. It took a team effort.”
Chattanooga got the scoring started in the 23rd minute with a header from freshman Ashley Simmons (Hixson, Tenn.) on a corner kick from sophomore Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.). It would take just a little more than two minutes for the Mocs to add its second goal of the game. Sophomore Clare Latham (Cordova, Tenn.) sent a through ball to classmate Loryn Queen (Lanesville, Ind.) whose shot beat out the Bulldog keeper from 10 yards out.
“We had six corner kicks in the first half against Gardner-Webb [on Friday],” Kyzer said. “We talked a lot about how we can’t have so many corners and not score. We stressed that and were able to convert today.”
Still in the first half, the Mocs would get another first-time goal as freshman Monica Speth (Janesville, Wis.) connected with the net on her shot. She was slotted the ball by sophomore Logan Higgins (Louisville, Ky.) and got past two defenders for had a 1-on-1 with the keeper on the left side for her first collegiate goal. Chattanooga took a 3-0 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Mocs would get two more goals to build its lead. Latham picked up a pass from Speth at the top of the box and beat out the defenders with a shot from the right side. In the 68th mninute, junior Crystal Mackezyk (Columbia, Tenn.) knocked in her team-high fourth goal of the year with an assist from sophomore Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.) for the Mocs’ fifth goal of the game.
“We were able to put two halves together today,” Kyzer said. “It showed that we came ready to play today.”
South Carolina State scored its lone goal in the waning minutes of the game as Dominique Brown fired in her third goal of the season from the right side for the final 5-1 margin.
The Mocs outshot SCSU 19-8 with a 13-5 shots on goal advantage. Senior keeper Taylor Mangrum (Franklin, Tenn.) started the game and played nearly 68 minutes in goal. She made just one save and did not give up a single goal. Sophomore Lauren Thomas (Germantown, Tenn.) was inserted into the game midway through the second half and made three saves while giving one goal.
Bulldog keeper Haley Austin made eight saves in her 90 minutes in goal while allowing five goals to the Mocs.
Chattanooga remains on the road with a match at Tennessee Tech Friday evening in Cookeville. The contest is set to kick off at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Live stats will be available for the match.
