WOMEN’S BASKETBALL RETURNS TO McKENZIE;
HOSTS GEORGIA SOUTHERN SATURDAY
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- It’s been nearly six weeks since the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team graced the interior of the McKenzie Arena for a game. On Saturday, UTC will host Georgia Southern University in a Southern Conference matchup. The game will tip at 7 p.m.
CHATTANOOGA (10-3, 2-0 SoCon)
The women’s basketball team went 8-3 in non-conference play and opened Southern Conference action with back-to-back road wins against UNCG and Elon in December. Chattanooga has topped the 70-point mark five times this season including three times scoring 80 or more points. UTC leads the SoCon with 69.5 points per game and outscoring opponents by 9.3 points per game. Chattanooga is shooting 44.2 percent from the field and 32.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Chattanooga opened the season with a non-conference win over Alabama. After dropping a decision at Tennessee, UTC won the next three – all at home – against Belmont, UAB and Auburn. From there, Chattanooga went on an eight-game road trip beginning with a three-game set in Hawai’i. UTC dropped a pair of close games against Minnesota (63-62) and the host Rainbow Wahine (60-55). In the finale, Chattanooga won a close 59-57 contest against Colorado State to launch a six-game win streak. In that streak UTC posted wins against Jacksonville State and Austin Peay as well as SoCon foes UNCG and Elon. The road game wrapped up at East Tennessee State in the final non-conference game between the two schools before the Bucs reenter the SoCon.
Senior Taylor Hall (New Tazewell, Tenn.) leads the team with 13.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. She has a team-best 61 assists, 16 blocked shots and 29 steals. Senior Ashlen Dewart (Spartanburg, S.C.) has started all 13 games this season at center and is averaging 11.1 points per game while shooting better than 52 percent from the field. Senior Faith Dupree (Knoxville, Tenn.), with 11 blocked shots this season, is third in scoring with 7.2 points per game off the bench. Freshman Chelsey Shumpert (Paducah, Ky.) has started all six games in the win streak at point and is fourth on the team in scoring with 7.1 points per game. She has a team-high 11 3-pointers and is shooting 82 percent (14-17) from the free throw line.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN (3-10, 1-1 SoCon)
The Eagles are on a three-game losing skid and are 2-9 in non-conference play. GSU’s three wins have come against Jacksonville State at home, incoming SoCon member Mercer on the road and SoCon foe Wofford at home. Georgia Southern is averaging 59.7 points per game and is outscored by more than 11 points by its opponents. The Eagles are shooting 35 percent from the field and have 66 3-pointers, making 29 percent of their attempts.
Anna Claire Knight leads the team in scoring with 15.2 points per game and is the only player in double figures. She is shooting 73 percent from the free throw line making 46-of-63. MiMi DuBose is second on the team in scoring with 9.8 points per game while Lacie Dowling leads the team in 3-point shooting with 23 on the year and 9.0 points per game. Danielle Spencer has a team-best 9.6 rebounds per game and Briana Jones has 8.7 boards per game.
