WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HOSTS THIRD PLACE FURMAN MONDAY AFTERNOON

 

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s basketball team will host third place Furman University in a rare Monday afternoon game at the McKenzie Arena. Due to the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday, the university is closed. The game will tip at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the McKenzie Arena box office or online at GoMocs.com.

 

WHAT TO KNOW…

 

- UTC has won 33 consecutive games at home. The first win in the streak was a Preseason WNIT win over UAB on 11/11/11. UTC defeated Tennessee, Auburn and Alabama in the streak. It is the longest NCAA Division I streak in the nation.

 

- Chattanooga has won 23 straight Southern Conference regular season games.

 

- UTC has won its last 11 games beginning with a win over Colorado State on December 1 in Hawai’i.

 

- Chattanooga is 44-21 against Furman since 1985.

 

- UTC has won 24 of the last 25 games against Furman. Furman’s lone win in the stretch was Feb. 6, 2012 in Timmons Arena.

 

- At home, UTC is 20-9 against the Paladins

 

SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA (15-3, 7-0 SoCon)

 

Chattanooga leads the Southern Conference in eight categories including scoring offense (70.6), scoring defense (59.3), scoring margin (11.2) and field goal percentage (.451). UTC also is tops in the league for assists (16.2), turnover margin (+2.33), assist-turnover ratio (1.3) and rebounding defense (34.3). The women’s team is 10-0 when scoring 70 or more points and has topped the 80-point mark four times. Against Wofford on Saturday, UTC snared a season-high 50 rebounds while also recording season-bests in assists (23), blocked shots (10) and steals (13).

 

Senior Taylor Hall (New Tazewell, Tenn.) leads the team in scoring (13.6), free throw percentage (.813), steals (2.2) and blocked shots (1.2). She leads the SoCon in assist-turnover ratio (1.7) and defensive rebounds (7.2) and is second for rebounds (8.7), assists (4.6) and playing time (35.9). Senior Faith Dupree (Knoxville, Tenn.) is second on the team for blocked shots and third for scoring and rebounding. Senior Ashlen Dewart (Spartanburg, S.C.) is second on the team in scoring and rebounding while ranking sixth in the SoCon for field goal percentage making 52.5 percent of her attempts.

 

SCOUTING FURMAN (10-7, 4-2)

 

Furman ranks third in the Southern Conference standings and suffered a loss one-point Saturday afternoon at last place Samford. The Paladins are third in the league in scoring with 68 points per game while giving up 64.6 to its opponents. From the field, Furman is ranked third in the league making 42 percent of its shots, second from beyond the arc (.351) and fifth from the free throw line (.694). Furman has a staunch defense allowing opponents to shoot just 38.4 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from the 3-point line. On the boards, the Paladins average 40 rebounds per game.

 

Sophomore Holli Wilkins (daughter of former UTC standout Gerald Wilkins) is fifth in the league in scoring with 14.9 points per game and Brittany Hodges is second on the team in scoring with 12.1 points/game. Sarah Durdaller is ranked 21st in the SoCon for scoring with 9.0 ppg and Whitney Bunn averages 7.8 ppg. Hodges is tied for third in rebounding with 8.6 boards per game and Durdaller is second on the team with 5.7 per game.
