Home court advantage describes the benefit that the home team is said to gain over the visiting team as a result of playing in familiar facilities in front of supportive fans.
The Chattanooga women's basketball team has taken that definition to heart.
Since moving full time into the McKenzie Arena in the 1999-2000 season, the Mocs have won 205 games with just 28 losses, winning nearly 88 percent of their games in the Roundhouse while leading the Southern Conference in attendance. According to RPIRatings.com, UTC's notable home court winning percentage ranks 10
th among all NCAA Division I schools.
Over the last four years, Chattanooga has posted a record of 52-1 with wins over Tennessee while the Lady Vols were ranked fourth last year and 20
th in 2012. The Mocs made waves across the nation with a second Top 10 win last year, defeating Stanford in the Scenic City.
Other wins at home include multiple wins over Villanova, UAB and Alabama as well as Auburn and Clemson. Perhaps the most thrilling was the Mocs win over Rutgers in the 2004 NCAA Tournament in front of more than 6,000 fans.
The next season, the Mocs opened the season hosting the NCAA Runner-Up Lady Vols and more than 10,000 fans showed up for the game. In 2008 when Tennessee was the reigning national champions, 7,000 fans filled the seats and watched a near upset when the Mocs pushed the envelope, led the Lady Vols as time was winding down, but fell short 66-63.
The 2015-16 season offers to be just as exciting when the reigning National Champions make their first appearance at McKenzie Arena this season and the Mocs open the season at home with the preseason WNIT.
UConn, a powerhouse in the NCAA, has won 10 national titles, all under the tutelage of head coach Geno Auriemma. He is the winningest coach all-time by percentage (.873) in the NCAA and fifth for number of wins with 917. He was third fastest to 600 wins and fastest to 700, 800 and 900.
Breanna Stewart, the reigning National Player of the Year, was a unanimous selection for American Athletic Conference preseason Player of the Year. She ranks 10
th on the Huskies' all-time scoring list with 1,960 points and fourth with 303 career rebounds. Last year she averaged 17.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
The season will open with the preseason WNIT on November 13. The Mocs will host McNeese State before finding out their fate the rest of the way through the bracket. Butler will make an appearance on Nov. 15. Arkansas State, UT Martin and UConn will fill in the slate around Thanksgiving.
The Mocs lone December home game will be Belmont on December 16. That game will tip at 11 a.m. and host area schools for an "Education Day" game. Harvard will close out the regular season non-conference schedule on January 4 at the Roundhouse.
Western Carolina and UNCG open Southern Conference play in mid-January. Furman and Wofford arrive in early February while Samford, Mercer and ETSU close out the schedule at the end of the month.
