Post-Game Quotes vs. ETSU
Chattanooga, Tenn. – Feb. 18 – McKenzie Arena
Â
Matt McCall, Head Coach
On offensive struggles:
"At some point in time in a game like that, we need someone to step up and make a play. I thought defensively we were good and we held them in the 60s. They're a good team, one of the best offensive teams in the country, and to hold them in the 60s and lose the game, I could have told you we must have been horrible in offense. The ball just didn't seem to find the basket, and we had some bad turnovers. We turned it over 19 times. When the ball's not going into the basket, and you're turning it over, you're not going to win."
Â
What was good tonight:
"We had nothing on our bench tonight. I thought
Nat Dixon gave us energy, but our bench…there was nothing. We've gotta get that corrected, but it's not just those guys fault. Our starters didn't play well either. Defensively, I thought we were good, but offensively we got nothing out of anyone."
Â
What do you tell your guys when the shots aren't falling:
"Keep playing the game. You have to keep coaching…the last thing you want do is quit. As a coach you don't ever want to quit on your team, so we try to keep coaching, and try to keep talking to them try to press on them. But bottom line is we didn't play. Someone's gotta make a play, with the game on the line, but that didn't happen."
Â
Casey Jones, Sr.-G
On frustration of playing well enough defensively to win:
"It's hard. It's all on us. We had open shots. We had to take care of the ball. I think when they went to that 1-3-1 zone, we had two or three turnovers back-to-back. Taking care of the ball is big. It's hard to win when you're turning it over."
Â
On the 8-minute scoring drought:
"When you go into spells like that, you can't turn the ball over, and you have to play hard. When you can't get shots up, then it's up to the big men to go up and get extra possessions because some nights the ball might not go in."
Â
Steve Forbes, ETSU Head Coach
Opening statement:
"I told my team three things. We've got to be gritty, grimy and we've got to play together, and for the whole game. And I thought that is what we did. We played really gritty and tough. Grimy is tough, getting on the floor for loose balls, and I thought we stayed together for the entire game. I knew they'd make a run, they've got a fabulous team, I've got a ton of respect for Matt and their players."
Â
On whether he was surprised with defensive performance:
"I liked where we were at with the team. I don't put a lot of stock in shoot around, but today, I could tell we were tuned in and ready to go. I thought it would be a heck of a game and come down to the wire, like at our place. No, I didn't expect to come in here and do that. Now, you've got to give our guys a lot of credit for that. Defensively, we just stayed with it. I knew they were going to make some runs, but when they did, we answered every time."
