Junior transfer Emily Poole finished third in the women’s Blue Division race.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Emily Poole placed third Saturday morning at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic to lead the women to a fourth place finish in the Blue Division. Sophomore transfer Ryan Gebelein led the men to a third place finish in the 8K at the EP "Tom" Sawyer Park.
"We had a couple of breakout performances today," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "Ryan Gebelein set a PR to lead the men's team and Emily Pool was 28 seconds faster here than last year at this race. Both had outstanding runs against a very fast field."
Poole, a transfer from Dalton State, covered the course in a time of 17:59.18, edging Detroit's Sydnie Fetherolf by less than one second for third. As a member of the Roadrunners, she has run at this race two times before.
South Alabama's Lauren Labuschaigne led the race, finishing with a time of 17:42.12. Arnica Zitting of Memphis was second in a time of 17:56.51. South Alabama took first in the women's race with 65 points followed by Memphis (69) and Arkansas State (70). The Mocs were fourth with 75 points and finished ahead of Marquette (94), Louisville (140) and Detroit (151).
Nicole Buehrle was the Mocs' second finisher across the line at 18:53.09 followed by Hannah Caldwell at 19:06.41 and Haley Morris in fourth with a time of 19:14.10.
In the men's race, Geberlein covered the 8-kilometer race in a PR time of 25:47.66 finishing 10th overall. John Payne was the second Chattanooga runner to finish, placing 15th overall in a time of 25:59.26 with Nathan Watson five spots back at 26:17.14 in 20th. Mark Britt followed him, placing 21st in a time of 26:20.17.
"Both the guys and girls teams improved from our last race, time-wise, at Montevallo," Meyer said. "More importantly the young kids got invaluable race experience against some of the nation's top teams. This will go a long way in helping us race later in the year."
South Alabama (50) and Memphis (52) finished first-second in the men's race as well with Chattanooga taking third with 76 points. The Mocs were ahead of Austin Peay (79), Western Kentucky (112), Detroit (138) and Marquette (170).
Nearly every runner posted either a personal- or season-best Saturday.
"We aren't as fast as we want to be," Meyer said. "But we are as fast as we want to be right now."
Chattanooga will close out the regular season at the Alabama Crimson Classic at the Harry Pritchett Park in Tuscaloosa, Ala., site of the NCAA South Region Championships.
