2) Details
The Mocs are ranked No. 13 in the nation in the STATS FCS Top 25 (No. 14 in FCS Coaches Poll), while LSU is No. 12 in the FBS after a strong showing in a season-opening shutout of BYU (27-0).
3) History
This is just the second meeting between the two schools, and the first in more than 60 years. The Tigers claimed a 26-19 victory on Nov. 6, 1954 in the prior tussle in Baton Rouge.
4) Top 15 is a Familiar Sight
The Mocs are a welcome sight to most FBS opponents because it tends to mean the host school is highly ranked and/or featuring a Heisman Trophy candidate. It's the eighth time in the last 10 campaigns UTC glares across the field at a school ranked among the top 15 nationally in the FBS and sixth with a Heisman favorite (RB Derrius Guice):
2008 – No. 4 Oklahoma (L, 2-57) – Sam Bradford, Heisman Winner
2009 – No. 2 Alabama (L, 0-45)
eventual BCS Champion – Mark Ingram, Heisman Winner
2010 – No. 2 Auburn (L, 24-62)
eventual BCS Champion – Cam Newton, Heisman Winner
2011 – No. 10 Nebraska (L, 7-40)
2013 – No. 1 Alabama (L, 0-49) – A.J. McCarron, Heisman runner-up
2015 – No. 14 Florida State (L, 13-52) – Dalvin Cook, 7th in Heisman voting
2016 – No. 1 Alabama (L, 3-31)
5) Three Notes to Notice
Senior outside linebacker Josh Phillips' brother Jacob is a freshman linebacker for LSU.
Starting quarterback
Nick Tiano (transfer from Mississippi State) and fullback
Chris Jones (Arkansas) have experienced "Death Valley" during their seasons in the SEC. Tiano served as backup QB in the Bulldogs 23-20 loss a year ago, while Jones and the Razorbacks upset the ninth-ranked Tigers 31-14 in 2015.
Last win vs. FBS opponent? Georgia State, 42-14, Sept. 7, 2013.
Last win in Louisiana? 38-14 at Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 17, 1983, also an FBS victory.
Last visit to Louisiana? Sept. 3, 1988 losing 33-19 at Tulane.
