Softball Claims Wins Over Hartford, Bucknell at Spring Games

Chattanooga beat Hartford 13-2 in six innings and Bucknell 4-2 in Madeira Beach, Fla.

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. --- The Chattanooga Mocs softball team improved to 11-7 on the year with wins over Hartford and Bucknell on Day Two of the Spring Games at Madeira Beach Saturday.
 
Chattanooga beat the Hawks 13-2 in six innings in the morning matchup then went on to claim a 4-2 win against Bucknell in the afternoon game.
 
The Mocs were 24-for-58 with 14 RBI and scored 17 runs over the two games. The pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts, nine hits and a 2.15 ERA.
 
Acelynn Sellers was 5-of-7 (.714) on the day with three RBI and three runs scored.  Emma Reed drove in two runs on a pinch hit double against Hartford. Alyssa Lavdis and Izzy Alley each picked up wins for the Mocs.
 
CHATTANOOGA 13, HARTFORD 2
In the opening game, the Mocs put two runs on the board in the first inning off four straight singles. Olivia Lipari singled up the middle with two outs. Sellers followed that with a single to put runners at first and second.
 
Kaili Phillips singled up the middle to score Lipari for the first run. The throw to the plate was wide moving both runners into scoring position. Jayce Purdy cracked the fourth single of the inning to plate Sellers, giving UTC a 2-0 lead after just a half inning.
 
Hartford cut that lead in half on a homerun in the bottom of the inning and tied it with another home run in the third.
 
It would be all Chattanooga after that. The Mocs put six runs on the board in the fourth and five more in the sixth to claim a 13-2 win over the Hawks.
 
Kendall Forsythe led off the inning with a single up the middle. A sac bunt moved pinch runner Hannah Pfeifer to second and then on to third on a wild pitch. Addy Keylon's single to right field scored Pfeifer A single and fielder's choice put Keylon on third. Zoe Wright stole second to put two runners in scoring position.
 
Olivia Lipari doubled into left field scoring both then scored on a single off the bat of Sellers. An infield error plated Sellers and a single from Jayce Purdy sent Phillips home to put the Mocs up 8-2 through four innings.
 
Sellers led off the sixth inning with a double and Phillips was hit by a pitch on the next at bat. Pfeifer laid down a bunt single to the pitcher to load the bases for pinch hitter Abby Orr. Her long single into center field held up the runners until it hit the grass sending Sellers home.
 
After a pitching change, and another out, Shayna Glass, pinch hitting for Emily Coltharp, sent a shot down the right side to score Pfeifer. Emma Reed came in for Wright and her double to right field sent Glass and Orr home to give UTC a 13-2 cushion heading into the bottom of the sixth.
 
UTC sat down all three batters for Hartford to end the game an inning early.
 
Izzy Alley went 4.2 innings with five strikeouts. She had a pair of earned runs on five hits. Brooke Parrott came on in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and struck out

CHATTANOOGA 4, BUCKNELL 2
In the afternoon game, the Mocs went 8-for-24, scoring four runs to get a 4-2 decision over Bucknell. Chattanooga improves to 11-7 on the year.
 
Once again, Chattanooga got the scoring started early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Emily Coltharp and Zoe Wright each singled to third to put runners on. Olivia Lipari grounded out to advance the runners and an infield error allowed Acelynn Sellers to reach and scored Coltharp for the first run.
 
Kaili Phillips hit a sac fly to left field, sending Wright home, putting UTC up 2-0 after the first.
 
Bucknell responded with a run in the top of the second on a double, cutting the Mocs lead to 2-1.
 
In the third, Coltharp again led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She reached third on a ground out and scored on a single from Sellers.
 
The Mocs fourth run came in the fourth. With one out, Presley Williamson doubled. Kailey Snell came in to run and scored with two outs on an error by the shortstop.
 
The final run of the game came in the sixth on a solo shot by Bucknell to make it 4-2. One more runner reached for the Bison, but the Mocs sat down the final two batters.
 
Alyssa Ladvis went all seven innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs. She improves to 3-0 on the year.
